Two Pterosaurs in Washington State

Some brief previews have been released for the second edition of the nonfiction book Live Pterosaurs in America, due to be published around early November, 2010. One new eyewitness account involves a teenager who was riding his bike in a rural area in the southwest part of the state of Washington. He saw two pterosaurs.

. . . to my left, and on a wood plank fence were two of the biggest bird-like creatures I could ever imagine! I almost crashed my bike! They were about 50 ft from me . . . When I was a kid, all I knew is what I saw in the history books, movies, etc. . . . I knew what I saw. I stood on the road and watched them for about an hour. One was hopping off the fence and appeared like it was teasing the other one.

They were huge! [Their feet] wrapped around a 2”x6” plank . . . a brown body color . . . I believe their wing span was about 20 ft tip to tip. . . . these creatures were nesting on the ground! Not in the trees, but in a brushy woodsy area near a small abandoned home. It’s strange my mom and I used to say, I wonder if those monsters ate the people that lived there! . . . they just up and left; we knocked at the door but it was clear no one was living there . . . [their] stuff was still in place.

Like many eyewitnesses that I have interviewed over the past seven years, this eyewitness was concerned about potential ridicule, so he has remained anonymous; nevertheless, I found his account credible and worthy to be included in the second edition of my book Live Pterosaurs in America. Washington has been added to the long list of American states in which common persons have reported extraordinary encounters with apparent modern pterosaurs.
